The energy saving light bulb uses 80% less energy than the traditional incandescent light bulb and lasts around 8 times longer. Despite this, consumers point to problems ranging from the light they give off to the way they look. These issues can both be solved through design.

The Plumen 001 is the world's first designer energy saving light bulb. Its dynamic, sculptured form contrasts with the dull regular shapes of existing low energy bulbls, in an attempt to make it a centre piece and a thing of beauty rather than an afterthought and a moral obligation.

The Plumen 001 screws into any standard bulb fitting, gives off a warm white light and will work either shaded or completely naked. Its name comes from "plume" -- a bird's show feather, designed to attract attention to a bird's prowess and beauty. This design does the same for the energy saving light bulb.

The Plumen 001 light bub was the overall winner at the prestigious 2011 Brit Insurance Design Awards. According to Stephen Bayley, the 2011 jury chair, "the Plumen lightbulb is a good example of the ordinary thing done extraordinarily well, bringing a small measure of delight to an everyday product."
