Atelier HOCH (short for Hochelaga, reflecting the Montreal-centric philosophy of the studio) was founded in 2010 by Maude Eloise Bouchard Furness, who creates contemporary furniture that reflects the spirit and cultural heritage of Quebec. Atelier HOCH seeks to contribute meaningfully to the burgeoning Quebec-based design market -- creating our furniture, chez nous.
Maude, who spent her childhood in Abitibi, settled in Montreal where she creates all her pieces in her east-end studio. She believes that design and respect for the environment are inextricably linked. Maude's designs are informed by a deeply held belief in the value of craftsmanship and artisanal expertise to create furniture of enduring charm and use. Her pieces are made by hand, using ecologically friendly materials. And, her pieces are made to last. She feels passionately that each piece she makes should create a personal sense of attachment in the owner. As she says: "When we love something and feel a connection to it, then we hold on to it. We keep it in our homes and cherish it because we know someone put thought and care into producing it."
